2 of the greatest musicians of our time on the same track means one thing and one thing only. Instant and utter love.
This is far from the first time multi-instrumentalist, producer, and drum prodigy Yussef Dayes and long-term collaborator/boy genius Tom Misch link together. Their 2020 release What Kinda Music
"Rust" is the second single from Yussef Dayes' highly anticipated 19-track debut solo studio album Black Classical Music, scheduled for September 8th. Some of the confirmed collaborators on the album included artists like Chronixx, Masego, Jamilah Barry, Tom Misch, Elijah Fox, and Shabaka Hutchings. We're in for a ride this summer!
"Rust" heavily relies on the motif of spirituality - something that will be touched upon in the record. The track is a firm demonstration of his agility, creativity, and technical prowess. The 2 are really going at it as the song smoothly ebbs and flows through emotions and ideas to ultimately leave listeners wanting more. Speaking of wanting more, Yussef is embarking on a US tour ahead of the album drop.
This pinnacle of jazz music follows the earlier release of the album's title track, a remarkable collaboration featuring Charlie Stacey and Venna. Stream both singles below.
"What is jazz," Dayes asks. "Where did the word derive from? Birthed in New Orleans, born in the belly of the Mississippi River, rooted in the gumbo pot of the Caribbean, South American culture, and African rituals. Continuing a lineage of Miles Davis, Rahssan Roland Kirk, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong - music that is forever evolving and limitless in its potential. The groove, its feeling, the compositions, the spontaneity, with a love for family, the discipline, and dedication in maintaining the very high bar set by the pantheon of Black Classical Musicians. Chasing the rhythm of drums that imitated one's heartbeat, the melodies for the mind and spirit, the bass for the core. A Regal sound for this body of music."
