VOLO has been one of my favourite artists for a long time; his discography has an organic warmth to it that few artists are able to match. "Faithkeeper" features Oregon-based vocalist Amethyst, who's airy tone lends the final touch to an already stunning track.
"Channeling the old school electronic aesthetic of Boards of Canada mixed with the contemporary ingenuity of modern-day greats such as Odesza, VOLO provides a fresh and forward-thinking sound."
Opening with a mosaic of delayed plucks, the sense of the space is complemented by the siren-Esque vocal cuts that echo in the distance. The verses are a masterclass in restraint. Amethyst's voice soon moves to centre stage, but the instrumental is kept subtle and low even as the drums begin laying down a fairly upbeat rhythm. Soft pads and wide textures lie alone underneath the lead line, harmonising beautifully but never taking up space they shouldn't.
