I've been in desperate need to find some relaxed and very spacious electronic sounds. Not beat-like, but rather an exotic and humble sound escape, ideally to some places far away where I currently am.
The Salvation came in Thoma's self-titled EP which I just heard yesterday and more specifically a track which quickly grew on me - "In Circular Thoughts". Drawing inspiration in various genres like downtempo and jazz, Tristan de Liège (formerly Stratus) and Benjamin Hill (Askanse) managed to create one of the most peacefully, self-aware piece of music (I hope that makes sense...). Sort of Edamame meets Emancipator.
Funny that I bring those 2 names actually. Thoma are actually part of Emancipator's Loci Record - a label we have been following and deeply respect here at the fox. I guess this release is a good evidence why.
A few thoughts on the album from the L.A. electronic duo:
With this album though, we wanted a looser feel, and I think the jazz influences are part of that. This album essentially came out of a series of extended improvisations where we’d have woodwinds, a guitar, and bass setup and ready to be recorded, and some foley samples and synth sounds ready to go.
Gorgeous stuff. If you want to dig deeper into this soundspaces, here's the full album stream below:
