This feature, besides a homage to SZA's incredible talent, goes out to @solace_of_sound who nicely alerted us about her new album dropping just a few hours after it is out!
As we rack up our Best of 2022 album selection, I bet this SOS, Solána's sophomore album, will end up being somewhere on the top. Had the pleasure of listening to half of it and felt the urge of rushing and being amongst the first to do a write-up.
Generally speaking, I think there's no one in the world that would doubt the fact that SZA is amongst the greatest artists in r&b of our generation. Her debut album CTRL (2017) blew our heads and while the pressure to deliver the same eminence again, she did not cave in and came back with absolutely superb material.
I chose the album's opening and title track "SOS" because it felt so powerful and I love how the instrumentation is tuned down to give a stage to her powerful vocals.
Album has a few powerful collaborators including Phoebe Bridgers, Don Toliver, Travis Scott, and Ol' Dirty Bastard himself.
I wanted to bring your attention to SOS's artwork which is very thematic. It depicts her standing on a diving board surrounded by the deep blue ocean. You may wonder why I used the word thematic - because she is a former marine biology major! A person of many talents.
