If you’re looking for a laidback, soulful jazz number with sinuous trumpet sounds and glistening guitar work, then look no further. South London musician Simon Jefferis has definitely got you covered. The multi-instrumentalist latest offering follows last year’s 'Way Down Here’, and showcases his virtuoso talent with Jefferis playing on drums, bass, keys and guitar.
The track titled 'High Grade' was co-written by and also features Natty Reeves on guitar and the scintillating trumpet you hear gliding across the track comes from Dylan Jones of Ezra Collective.
Speaking about the song Jefferis says “I really just want to play music live, and don’t want to be overly reliant on technology” he explains, referring to his shift into a more mature sound. “I want to play some drums, get the best musicians I can around me, and just jam on stage. This next EP is for that purpose, and this song sets the scene. High Grade is the benchmark.”
The trio excels on this track and the incredible chemistry between them has me hoping that they get together again real soon.
This is seriously good stuff, lend your ears and look out for more mastery from SJ in the near future.
