The Punch!

Been a minute since Shigeto's 2017 The New Monday and while the Detroit-based drummer, producer, radio host, and label owner (Portage Garage Sounds) has been active, I was beginning to wonder what to expect next from him.

My curiosity was answered earlier today when I received an update from Zack's label - my favourite Ghostly International. Needless to say - it was an instant addition to our New Music Finds playlist.

So yeah, today we celebrate the first single from Shigeto's upcoming record Cherry Blossom Baby - "The Punch!" featuring fellow Detroit musician KESSWA and her alluring voice.

The goal of Zach and the curated special group of guests and players is to present a moment in time - a celebration of self-love and an expression of vitality deeply rooted in Detroit and enriched by his family’s cultural heritage. This doesn't come off as a surprise given the topic has been running through his art since the very inception of Shigeto (btw that's his middle name). Also, a reference to his 2012 Lineage album, which is a pure masterpiece. A record from my collection that I'll certainly be playing soon.

"I am a cherry blossom baby," he elaborates. "We all are cherry blossom babies, resilient and constantly growing. We will continue to thrive."

We'll be offered an exciting and unique take on traditions in electronic, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, channeled through the prism of Shigeto and artists like Zelooperz, Ahya Simone, and Tammy Lakkis. Judging by the back of the vinyl, there will be 12 artists involved with the project.

Cherry Blossom Baby is scheduled for release on October 25th, but you can already pre-order the vinyl on Bandcamp.
