The best way to describe Pikes's new single is... a blend between Bon Iver and... Genesis. Yep, this might sound strange, but I think it's definitely hits the nail on the head.
Spacious, synth-driven ambiance and captivating/somehow bizarre vocals... "Pterodactyl 1994" is definitely something out of the box. I don't know much about Pikes besides his SoundCloud description "artist, producer, animator, handsome uncle", but here's what he had to share about the track...
I woke up with the pterodactyl chorus in my head and I had already come up with the title and knew that I wanted to use it in a kind of weird way rhythmically. I think many people that grew up in the 90s can relate to being totally fascinated by dinosaurs and this being a flying reptile I think was an awesomely fitting metaphor.
This song is about discovering how small my world was for the very first time. Growing up in a small town and discovering a new, bigger world and experiencing both awe and terror. I always thought I was weird and different but I remember going away on vacation to the capital and discovering that people didn’t have to live or act in unison like most of them did back home.
The sense of being different I later found was an attribute that made me feel pride instead of the fear and insecurity that I had previously felt. This is a reflection and a recapturing of the moment that that spark of a realisation was lit.
