The neo-soul UK duo Melonyx just released their first EP Black Elixir, via our mates Tru Thoughts. It features previous singles “Melanin Queens” and “Energy” and besides a generous amount of musicality, talent and emotion, it contains Melonyx’s take on the subject of Black girl magic.
Written and recorded with renowned UK hip hop producer Joe Buhdha, the EP is the embodiment of recurring conversations between Melonyx throughout their friendship. Drawing on influences from the worlds of hip hop, neo-soul and lovers rock, the release sheds light on the high value, power and energy of Black women. The duo shares:
Black Elixir is our play on the theme of Black girl magic. Our perspectives as Black women and our desire to uplift our fellow Black girls was very much at the forefront of our minds.
Melonyx summon this energy into the title track “Black Elixir”, bringing the attention to everything that is admirable and healing about the love and affection of a Black woman. If you’ve heard another track of theirs, you already know what a multifaceted harmonic force they are. This song is another proof of their ability to complete each other and find balance in harmonizing melodies. Their vocal performance is sliding on the slow-paced percussion, dreamy strings, seductive bass guitar and tender keys, thus creating a magical sonic panorama.
The song (and the whole EP) is a perfect soundtrack for a cosy evening with your beloved or why not yourself and a glass of wine.
