Through steady house/techno grooves, lush ambient pads and delicately textured melodies, Japanese artist and music producer Lycoriscoris adds a whole new dimension to the meaning of "Shizumu" (in English - "sinking" or "falling down mentally").
The track's key features are the plucky-sounding synth sounds reverberating in the distance as though their echo tails are bouncing off the walls of the dense urban jungle. This overwhelming feeling of insignificance alluded to in the concept of the song then makes you turn to your inner self for a close retrospective reevaluation. Japanese producer Lycoriscoris elaborates more on that exact idea:
“Memories and retrospection are the fundamental concepts that inspire my music. For instance, my own artist name plays on the name of the Lycoris flower. In Japan, it's often found near cemeteries, which is of course a dark connotation - however, one day when searching in the Language of Flowers (Floriography) I discovered that the word Lycoris also means “I’m looking forward to seeing you again". I realized how this dark flower also hides a beautiful and positive message. I think my music, and my new album ‘Chiyu’, has the same kind of dualism as the Lycoris flower.”
The visuals for "Shizumu" add a whole lot of emotional and musical weight to the already beautiful soundscapes on the track, so it's highly advisable to experience it as intended:
