Last fall I went to a James Blake concert in my native Minneapolis. (He melted my face off, as expected). What I didn't expect was to discover another awesome, innovative artist - LA-based Nosaj Thing, who opened that night.
Nosaj Thing surprised me because he gave an intense, stomach-dropping concert with his electronic music, but it wasn't because the beats were fast and the drops were uber-techno. Somehow he fuses downtempo, ambient instrumental electronic music with emotion and bass. The product is raw, gritty and intense.
Back in May, Nosaj posted this remix of Jon Hopkin's "Open Eye Signal"; it's more downtempo and bass-heavy than the original track (which is 8+ minutes of all kinds of rad) but its energy still shines through. Nosaj knows his way around the remixing track - hell, he's worked with The xx and Radiohead - and I predict continued success for him in the coming months and years.
