The Brooklyn future soul artist Johnny Burgos reminds us that sometimes you gotta embrace the unknown in his new single “The GREY.”
He had already begun working on this track before the world came to a halt and creating in the midst of a pandemic made Burgos reconsider the purpose of discomfort.
“I reframed a ‘grey area,’ and it was incredibly inspiring. I took it day by day, showed up purposefully, passionately, persistently into the grey, and I discovered a newfound freedom to create beyond the inner-critic.”
The track stirs together hip-hop and soul with the help of Burgos’ fellow Brooklynites hip-hop producer DJ Skizz, lyrical poet Leo Coltrane and trumpeter GIL-XL. The fitting contrast between Burgos’ warm, harmonic vocals with just the right amount of soulful riffs, and Coltrane’s rhythmic pep talk verse makes you really break off any worries of uncertainty.
The video acts as a visual representation of “The GREY” and follows a couple’s morning routines in gloomy Brooklyn until their days intersect. Meanwhile, Burgos and Coltrane are posted up on a city rooftop - rapping and vibing.
