The first couple of seconds of this track would certainly prompt you to check your calendar or watch to make sure it's 2019… That's how heavy the weight of nostalgia is in 'Slim Pickings'.
It literally feels as if we're tossed back into the late 70s by virtue of the soulful vocals and upbeat funk rhythm. What I find to be interesting about this is the somewhat conflicting juxtaposition between the lyrics and the instrumental. The lyrics are a presentation of a woman who has lost hope in her love life due to the stage she has reached in her life, but the beat is such a joyous delight. Particularly when the chorus is ornamated with a timely arrangements of trumpets. Overall, Izo Fitzroy provides a listening experience that you can get down to whilst taking in a heartfelt story.
