Stereofox has always been about discovering new artists, but I firmly believe it is also important to follow their path, careers and journey over time. People change, artists too and with growth comes novelty.
That is why I am very excited to have one of my favourite beatmakers xander. back on. After doing a podcast episode on the Fox Tales & an interview in 2023, it's time to see what's new with him.
Today's chat is also a celebration of xander.'s brand new highly-anticipated LP Storytelling. A beautiful 14-track collection of smooth, yet groovy instrumental lofi / jazzhop compositions featuring artists like Matt Wilde, Rikard From, Noé Mina, Søren Søstrom (Elijah Fox), and Dominic Lalli.
I had the pleasure of listening to the full album earlier this week (and of course have been following the singles along) and it is one of those things that bring faith and excitement about the genre back in me.
Get ready for a real weekend treat.

Hey xander., great to have you back! How have you been since the last time we spoke in 2023 when you released Bliss?
Hey man, thanks for having me back! I’ve been great. I’ve been busy and I’m excited about this new project!
How would you describe Storytelling in a sentence?
This project is a sonic journey crafted to be your escape from stress and the chaos of everyday life.

What’s the story behind the name Storytelling?
Storytelling is my way of channeling the musical influences that have shaped me since childhood. In high school, I was part of a jazz ensemble, but I never had the chance to fully explore those jazz roots in a project—until now. I've always been captivated by the intricate and detailed nature of jazz music, and this project is my attempt to blend the sounds that inspired me growing up with my present-day style.

What would be the best setting to listen to the new record for the first time?
To me, the perfect setting to listen to this record is either when you're surrounded by close friends, enjoying music that enhances your connection, or when you're alone, seeking a moment to disconnect from the world and lose yourself in an album that offers a true escape.
The album is packed with great features. Tell us about your collaborators and how you go about choosing the people you work with when it comes to your own releases.
Great question. I've included several artists who inspired me while creating this album. One of the features is Rikard From, whose jazz piano album had a huge influence on me. I reached out to him about collaborating, and I'm incredibly grateful he was eager to be involved.
Another track, "An Escape," came together with Elijah Fox. I sampled a line from him, then brought Kiefer into the mix, and the result was incredible. The song felt like an escape while I was creating it, which is why I chose the title.
What does it mean for you to create an album as opposed to a single?
To me, an album is a cohesive body of work where the tracks come together to form a unified whole, while a single is a track that stands out from the rest. Even though most of these songs were released as singles, each one has a distinct character. I believe no two jazz songs truly sound alike. But if you know of any that do, I'd love to hear about them!
What was the feeling you had the first time you heard the whole record cohesively? Do you listen to these things alone or share with close friends for feedback, etc.?
When I first listened to the entire project, I was genuinely impressed with how cohesive it turned out. I made a conscious effort to create seamless transitions, using ambient sounds to connect each track, so it feels like one continuous journey.
My goal was to evoke the experience of being in a car, cruising to smooth jazz beats while seeking an escape from the world. While I occasionally share my work with friends for feedback, I usually keep most of my tracks to myself.

Do you see albums as a way to combat the ongoing attention deficit in society?
Yes, I believe so. The impact can vary depending on the music, but I think the type of Lofi beats I create enhances focus. Studies have shown that listening to Lofi beats can improve concentration and academic performance. With this album, I aim to provide a deeply immersive musical experience where listeners can lose themselves in the music. It’s designed for those looking to disconnect from the distractions of the outside world.
You’re very active creatively - how do you make sure you always have that creative juice? Do you take time off or do something that re-charges you?
I’m often asked about this, and yes, I do have other hobbies that I connect with and find inspiration from. My hobbies, along with everyday experiences, play a crucial role in fueling my creativity. I frequently write about personal experiences and what matters most to me. External influences are key to my music creation, and my hobbies often spark ideas for new tracks.
Do you feel it has become progressively harder to push out and find an audience for instrumental-only music?
Not too much has changed, as there remains a large audience for instrumental music. Instrumental music is evolving and branching into various genres. While lofi beats are still popular, other styles like ambient music and slow house are gaining attention. Even friends of mine who aren’t into lofi enjoy ambient music. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, but I believe instrumental music will always have a place.
What is your advice to young up-and-coming producers who are just starting in today’s reality?
My advice to young and upcoming producers is to stay authentic and true to yourself. It's surprising how authenticity is sometimes undervalued, but it’s crucial to make music that genuinely resonates with you, rather than conforming to others' standards. Stick to your vision, and remember that success may come at different times for different people. Stay true to your creative self and keep generating ideas. Authenticity and perseverance will help you find your place!
What was the last movie that made an impact on you?
The last movie that truly impacted me was ‘Jesus Revolution‘ on Netflix. It resonated deeply with me and reinforced my Christian values. I appreciate how the film promotes kindness, even when faced with adversity, and offers valuable lessons on navigating life's challenges. It was genuinely inspiring, and I highly recommend it!
Who inspired you musically these days? Any new artists we should be checking out?
I feel like everyone knows about Mk.Gee now, but I was following him when he only had around 6,000 Instagram followers. His sound design and compositions are incredibly inspiring to me. I also love Blue Lab Beats for their amazing jazz beats—they really resonate with me. Of course, I’m still a fan of the classics like J Dilla and 9th Wonder. If you're looking for something less mainstream, check out Ben Jones; I highly recommend him!
What’s next after the album is out?
I’m working on a couple of new lofi albums, set for release later this year, and I’m really excited about them. Additionally, I have produced several projects with other artists that are also on the way. Stay tapped in!
What’s next for xander.?
There’s so much going on right now, and while some details I can’t share publicly, I can share that I’m working on two more projects set to be released this year. Additionally, I’m exploring new types of production that will roll out later this year and into the next with some really cool collabs. I’m also excited to announce that I’ll be performing more frequently on the show circuit!
