Today we're marking quite an important (for me) turning point for Stereofox. A month ago we introduced the mini mix series which were curated by people from the staff, but after a while we decided to take things to the next level and invite up-and-coming producers to show us their favourite tracks.
The guy who firstly jumped onboard with the idea is someone who has been on my radar for the past few months and someone who has been working very hard to move forward in the scene - swindail (part of ZenSupremacy collective). I guess you guys have read about him already, but besides the mix, we decided to do a short interview and introduction to the person behind the moniker. Enjoy both the awesome mix (free download here) and the interview below.
Hi there, Syd! Let's start with the basics? How did you end up doing the music you're doing today? Did you have any musical upbringings growing up?
i think i just started messing around on garageband when i was a young kid and stuck with that experimental mindset i guess. tons of musical upbringings, i’m big on jazz and a lot of EDM stuff too. way too many to list.
I firstly heard of you about 4 months ago with that "gellaitry groove" came out. Was that the moment you felt things are picking up? Like an "aha" moment.
How does your average day look like? Is beat-making a full time thing yet?
my average day is really boring but never the same, sometimes i’ll do nothing but surf the net all day or some days i’ll be out and about in the city getting food or doing a studio session or something. high school would be a regular thing but i’ve just finished it.
You're currently running a crowd-funding campaign to fund your trip to the States, so you can "hang out and make music". Best of luck with that! Tell us a bit more about this plan. Also, is there already any set plan about the whole journey - any favourite destinations or artists you want to play with?
i just want to come to america because the beats scene is super popping there right now, not so much in australia just yet. and i have tons of internet friends over there that i wanna cuddle. not too much to it really. haven’t planned the full journey yet but i’d like to visit LA, san fran, new york, new jersey and texas maybe? i don’t know just yet. maybe hawaii too. definitely want to work with flamingosis, weird inside, josh pan, madbliss, deffie and a few others i can’t recall right now.
It was really nice to see that you're also writing about music. Is that just a space to "let things out" or writing is something you're also interested in?
i just like writing reviews and informative pieces for fun, so i thought why not write about music i like? it’s been awesome so far, i’m writing here and there for alaya’s blog now which is super cool.Given the fact you've been "present" in the music community for about a year or so (correct me if I'm wrong), where do you hope to be in... lets say 2 years from now?
more people started to notice me maybe 6-8 months ago but i’ve been making tunes for a couple of years. where do i hope to be in 2 years… travelling a lot would be cool. and i’d love to be in a position where i can throw a show and get people to come off of my own back. like people coming out to just see me play. that would be a dream.Where's the best place to eat cheesecake in Sydney?
my place. i make pretty good lemon cheesecake imo. i’ll test that with the america baes tho. Thanks for the interview. Any final thoughts? Anything that's on your mind
it’s pretty fkn weird i’m writing this. but super fun too. thanks for having me <3
