Fans of Canadian synth pop producer/singer-songwriter/artist Grimes, a.k.a. Claire Boucher’s earlier work might wince at her latest collaboration, which was originally written for Rihanna. Or, they might dig it greatly. Her newest single, released June 26th, offers something a bit different from "regular Grimes".
However, as one can’t step into the same river twice, it’s hardly a surprise Boucher is trying out new sounds. In regard to the follow-up to 2012’s Visions she’s working on, I offer you this artist quote:
"I've been working on more percussive noise music and also a lot of straight vocal music. I want to make dark percussive shit and... release an album that's halfway between ethereal reggaeton and industrial dance music but is still very pop in its song [structures]."
For those of you who are new to the music of Grimes, I recommend two things. Firstly, checking out songs like Venus in Fleurs, Devon, Genesis, and Oblivion. Secondly - keep an eye out for that new album (this also applies to current Grimes-ites).
Over and out.
