“Blossoming” is a slow-burning dance between two sensibilities, a shimmering jazzy gem, just like the rest of the songs in Gazelle & the Bear’s debut album Weird Shaped Clouds.
The duo behind the project are drummer Julian Berann and pianist slash vocalist Ines Kolleritsch. As Gazelle & the Bear, they are responsible for one the most impressive and nuanced debut releases of the beginning of 2021. If you want to get a glimpse behind the album without hearing it in its entirety, “Blossoming” is a wonderful example of what you can expect in general.
It’s a tender mixture between modern R’n’B and off-hand jazz, one that is devoid of any flashiness or in-your-face intrusiveness characteristic for the majority of this kind of music hybrids. On the contrary, the song, as Gazelle & the Bear’s music as a whole, sounds as two people sharing their most intimate and deepest of secrets in the middle of the night. It’s almost as overhearing whispers of a conversation between two lovers. It’s a hard effect to achieve, but the duo does it with impressive style and subtlety, showcasing true mastery and craftiness.
...And that’s their debut!
