Since its inception, the sound of Stereofox has always been in a state of perpetual transformation which reflects the team's current mood, taste, and curiosity. I've grown fond of psychedelic rock over the years and growing up on artists like Jimi Hendrix, the love towards bands like Khruangbin or Dengue Fever came naturally.
I was lucky enough to find more of this soulful psychedelic sound and New York-based trio Free Whenever is one of my latest discoveries I wanted to share with you. Their unique sound, which they describe as "psychedelic groove music," is characterized by interwoven, conversational melodies from the bass and guitar. These melodies are supported by a foundation of Afro-Latin percussion and dynamic, hip-hop-inspired drums.
The band released their self-titled LP last Friday and I wanted to highlight one of my favourite songs on it. "Sticky" is mellow, laid-back, and characterized by improvisation. I appreciate the dub feel that's lurking in-between the gracefully performed chords and tight drumming.
