Miguel Martin or Cheap Monk is an upcoming Spanish based producer who recently started uploading his trippy lo-fi hip-hop tracks on his SoundCloud and Bandcamp pages, as well as some videos on YouTube including training sessions with his gear.
For "Lavanda", Cheap Monk took inspiration from Flying Lotus' album Cosmogramma and especially a track called "MmmHmm" featuring Thundercat. Cheap Monk says the drums there have a moving vibe, almost as if made by a train, with a crunchy sound like in Madvillain's and J Dilla's beatmaking style (that kind of delayed drums).
I wanted to replicate this "moving train vibe" from "MmmHmm". Then I found the sample, which had this super cool oriental-ish trippy style, the problem was that I had to slow down the drums tempo so they would fit together, that's when I thought it would be cool to slow it down to 60 bpm, because the kick sounded like a heartbeat.
Lavender is a common flower in Malaga which smells nice and keeps mosquitoes away "so it's pretty dope" just like Cheap Monk's beats.
