After 2 years, it's so good to see Catching Flies back! And what a comeback... his new track "New Gods" absolutely blew my mind from the get go, plus it felt like a new direction in UK's producer sound.
The song, featuring singer Oscar Jerome and rapper Jay Prince, draws inspirations from the sound worlds of the jazz, soul, hip-hop, house and electronica genres. The best way to describe the track (for me) is the kind of sound to play when you want to make the world stop spinning for a second and just drift away into your own creative brain without any distractions. The guys did hell of a job blending all those inspirations together!
Speaking on "New Gods" Catching Flies explains:
“The track represents a breakthrough moment in the sense that I felt super inspired again after a long period of feeling frustrated with my own process. Collaboration felt like a good way to fix this… and it did! Oscar had just released one of his debut tracks ‘Give Back What You Stole From Me’ and I remember hearing it on Gilles Peterson’s show and it really caught my ear because it sounded fresh and I hadn’t heard anything like it. I hit him up and we did a session. I also wanted to have a verse in there so hit up Jay – I’ve been a fan of his work for a while. Everything came together very naturally. The tune is essentially about reaching equilibrium in your own life… fresh starts and bettering yourself – so all things considered it felt pretty poignant and really resonated with me.”
