As the year is coming to an end, I'm reflecting on some of my favorite releases, and one of the first full-length albums that popped into my mind was Butcher Brown's Solar Music released in October.
The Virginia-based quintet fuses soul, jazz, old school funk and enhances the experience with a number of legendary vocalists from the r&b, soul, and hip-hop realms. One of those artists is writer, producer, and emcee Nappy Nina - the true start of "Half Of It", easily one of my favourite joints on the record. I absolutely love the breezy feel of her flow, which extracts the very best of Andrew Randazzo gorgeous bassline on the track.
The song has this very cocoon feel to it, because of the smooth and easy intro with the woodblock sounds and acoustic chords. It exhales chill early on before it evolves rapidly as Nappy Nina stacks up her bars.
