Jillian Banks, or just BANKS is one of those artists who became known thanks to the Internet. Frankly, my initial encounter with her was rather unimpressive. At first listen she showed me nothing new, just a chill, slightly darker R&B over bumping synthesizers: not as interesting as FKA Twigs, far less sultry than The Weeknd.
Then came the producers that made the world of difference in BANKS' favor, turning her music into a more elaborate and complete product and proving that with the green thumb of guys like SOHN, Shlohmo, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, BANKS' artistry could really blossom.
In this case the magic touch is Lil Silva's and what came out of his collaboration with the L.A. singer is really impressive. "Goddess" is a subtly powerful track, designed to be heard over and over again. All the stuff that is happening underneath BANKS' vocals: the constant throbbing, the chants on the background, the "drowning" echoes, the synth tremors - makes the track rich and vivacious.
"Goddess" promotes BANKS' first full-length album by the same name. With this being one of my favorite Banks tracks so far and with the list of producers she announced will part-take in the LP, I must say I can't wait for its release in September.
