A multifaceted artist with a creative drive like no other, instrumentalist, vocalist and producer James Berkeley has established himself within the UK jazz, soul and R&B scenes through his many musical endeavours. From garnering a reputation for an impressive live show with his band Yakul to more behind-the-scenes work producing and writing for artists, now James spreads his wings as a solo artist kick started with a collaborative EP alongside prolific collaborator, edbl, which has racked up over 1 million streams since it’s release in October.
James has worked extensively with celebrated jazz veterans Incognito, even co-writing multiple tracks on their album Tomorrow’s New Dream and touring with the band with residencies at Tokyo and Milan’s famous Blue Note, before certifying a prominence on the jazz scene when Yakul sold out Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in 2022. His collaboration with R&B songstress Mereba reached over a million streams preceding Yakul’s 2021 debut album Rise Indigo.
An ambitious and avid songwriter, James stands firm that great ideas come through trust and passion for the craft - while welcoming inspiration in all its forms. With a flair for lush and complex harmonies and a matchless falsetto, complemented by emotive jazz piano voicings and a soft spot for analog synths, the consistent nurturing of creativity is James’ driving force. James also takes pride in sharing his process and advice for musicians via Twitch and YouTube, allowing him to utilise over a decade navigating the music industry to help others find their way too.
