Jackson Dyer needs no introduction. The Australian-born artist has long ago won our hearts and attention with his guitar lullabies and captivating voice.
Today we're honoured to premiere the live video of his latest performance at the Redbull Studio here in Berlin. After the release of three independent EPs (many of which we've featured on the website) and almost four years in Berlin, Jackson decided to concentrate on writing his first album and he returned to the shores of Australia. His debut LP, Inlet, is heavily influenced by the landscape over there and the awe-inspiring ocean that surrounded him as the album progressed.
Inlet is an optimistic and introspective collection of songs, blending field recordings of Australia's natural wonders with Dyer’s evocative lyricism and spacious, electronic production. Today's premiere - "Release", is a smooth, sultry song, centered around Dyer’s compelling and haunting vocals. Reverb-laden falsettos are sustained by his sparse, yet emotive production, and the offbeat bass line and powerful drums form the rhythmical foundation of the song. Jackson shares...
"Release" was an enjoyable song for me to write and produce, and it was inspired by a vintage bass guitar and an old, Roland keyboard that I bought around the same time as I was writing ‘Inlet’. For me, the polyrhythms and the minimal keyboard textures that these new instruments prompted are the most important parts of this song. Although the track has some melancholic undertones, I think that the amazing performance of Melbourne-based jazz drummer Myka Wallace on the track coupled perfectly with my production and resulted in a far more positive song.
Dyer has just finished a large European tour in support of Irish Indie act Talos and the remainder of 2019 will see the release of ‘Inlet’, followed by a headline tour throughout Europe at the end of the year.
