We get asked this question a lot, so I thought of putting a short list on some jazz (house) recommendations similar to Berlioz.

We also put together a playlist, in case you are seeking more inspiration (available on all platforms here).

Who is berlioz?

Our encounter with berlioz was before the actual existence of the modern-day jazz house purveyor. Formerly known as Ted Jasper, we first covered his music back in 2021 with a track called "Do Something". Now, to the point, Jasper Edwared Attlee (AKA berlioz) is a South African, London-based producer, DJ, and saxophone player whose music (and creatives) have taken over the internet in recent years. The Cape Town-born musician has created what some call a brand new explosion around the jazz house genre.

He released over 50 tracks as Ted Jasper most spanning across alt / indie / soulful house sound landscape. He launched berlioz (inspired by Disney's The Aristocats, not the widespread opinion that it was the French composer) in 2022, and the rest is history. Since the new moniker's inception, he has rapidly gained recognition for his distinctive blend of jazz and house music. His sound is characterized by lush saxophone lines, intricate rhythms, and evocative spoken-word samples, creating a style that has been described as “if Matisse made house music”. Something I personally really vibe with.

He released jazz is for ordinary people EP (2023) and open this wall LP (2024), and his signature animated style videos have taken over the internet, gaining millions of views on TikTok and Instagram. I think the music, paired with their alluring essence, is what drew so many people to his music.

Stay up to date.

Jazz house artists similar to berlioz

There are tons of feuds on the Internet, mostly between classical jazz heads and new fans on whether the word jazz should be used

If you love what berlioz does, you should definitely listen to those artists (suggestions welcomed):

  • St Germain
  • dublon
  • Chaos in the CBD
  • OKvsho
  • TABLE
  • Tour-Mauburg
  • Izzy Wise
  • Jitwam
  • Gavinco
  • Half Dead Dave
  • Session Victim
  • Alexander IV
  • Bellaire
  • Jazzbois
  • Blue Lab Beats
  • FKJ
  • Joe Armon-Jones
  • Laurence Guy

While not all of these artists fall strictly under the jazz-house label, they operate in a similar sonic space, and are soulful, versatile musicians well worth knowing.

Of course, there are others who occasionally explore the jazz house space, but not necessarily "dwell" in it - that's why I recommend exploring our playlist (for example) for daily inspiration.
