Been keeping tabs on New Zealand singer/songwriter Arjuna Oakes for some time now as I've always been mesmerized by his ability to suck listeners into his psychedelic world and how mesmerizing his voice sounds.
The now London-based artist returns with a brand new tune reminiscent of the works of Toro y Moi, Thundercat, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. With a funky bassline and tight drumming, "Motels" feels like the perfect soundtrack to those long and lazy summer weekends where you just roam around and soak in the here and now.
When it comes to the inspiration behind writing the song, Arjuna shares, "Motel is a song about feeling stuck in life but using that pent up energy to propel yourself into the future. The imagery of being stuck in a shitty motel room just felt like it resonated well. I wanted the groove to feel relentless, and the psychedelic production to hint at the darker themes at play."
