Alex Vargas may be a name familiar to few, but I can say with some certainty that this won't be the case for long.
In all fairness, Alex has been around for a while in various guises. Danish born, having relocated to London to further his musical career, he eventually formed Vagabond, a rock/pop band signed to Geffen Records. After moderate success which included a top 40 album, supporting The Script and a slot at Glastonbury, the band disbanded in 2010. Since then Alex has performed as a vocalist with trance outfit "Above and Beyond", in addition to quietly kicking out an extended EP (Howl) in 2013.
Fast forward to 2015 and his first single, “Till Forever Runs Out” drops. Originally released as part of the 2014, 4-track Solid Ground EP, this track is a masterpiece and deserves to bask in it's own “single” status. Rich, deep and layered with the brilliance that comes from experimenting with genius, the windy road has certainly paid off.
Alex has been likened to many that have come before, but to be honest none of the supposed similarities sit right with me. “Till Forever Run Out” whispers more Bon Iver than Robert Palmer - its just more defined and deliberate.
The second track on the single, “Oh Love How You Break Me Up”, screams yet more potential and will undoubtedly appeal to a wider more commercial audience, and it is equally brilliant, but the title track puts Vargas right up there with the best singer/songwriter talent coming through the UK right now.
Who knows, after years of flirting with brilliance, this just might be Alex Vargas' time – and about time too.
