We've been following Montreal-based Ghostly Kisses' work since 2020, and their Akira release Darkroom marks their most refined and approachable project yet, all while remaining true to her unique style.
Margaux Sauvé and Louis-Étienne Santais make up the duo of Ghostly Kisses, and a bulk of their early works could be described as hushed yet dramatic and emotionally rich. Darkroom, however, reveals just how much they've evolved, drawing from a broad spectrum of styles to elevate their production while also drawing inspiration from their fans to create an immersive world around the album.
They encouraged fans to submit anonymous letters about pain and grief on their website, which were later woven into the album’s themes and narratives. The title Darkroom perfectly captures this sentiment. A fascinating irony however is that there are moments such as “Ocean” that feel uplifting, walking a fine line between melancholy thanks to the vocals and hope by virtue of the vibrant instrumental.
