If you were into the indie hip-hop and instrumental beats scene back in the early to mid-2000s, you’d be excited to see this name here. NYC producer Blockhead returned to the newly revived Future Archive Recordings with a fantastic new album, Mortality Is Lit!.
Blockhead initially gained recognition as Aesop Rock’s go-to producer before carving out his own path with legendary UK label Ninja Tune, becoming a standout creator of vibrant, sample-based instrumental music inspired by the likes of The Avalanches and DJ Shadow. Diving into his new album feels like a nostalgic wonderland, and beautifully personifies tasteful plunderphonics but in a modern manner. He traverses eras and styles spanning jazz, funk, blues, easy listening, disco, exotica, cinematic, and TV show snaps, all crafted together with a hip-hop sampling sensibility that is truly inimitable.
Beyond that, if you’ve seen Blockhead’s social media you’ll notice that the title and the cover art serves as a reflection of his playful personality too. On every stretches beyond the 5-minute mark and showcases his ability to create a journey that twists and turns, to the point where you’re left wondering if you’re listening to the same track.
