Many people describe An Awesome Wave as innovative. I think such classification is a bit too much. Don’t get me wrong – I do find it very interesting and impressive, but that's about it. Frankly said – loving the record! It’s been on my playlist ever since I found it months ago. However, it is not the most innovative album out there and it’s far from being a revelation in the genre. They remind me of Mew for some reason. Just my two cents, you know?
Whenever we speak about the best new acts from 2012 we gotta mention Alt-j. The Brits have been around for nearly 5 years but that’s their debut album. Apparently they took their time and they did well. It’s been highly successful year full of achievements such as selling 100 000 copies and winning the British Mercury Prize!
One of the most important things I feel I should underline when talking about An Awesome Wave is that I highly recommend listening to the entire album from the beginning to the end. Like a small music journey. In case you haven't done that, whenever you find yourself with half an hour to spend on good music - go for it! I am pretty hectic, so I don't do that very often, but this album is a good exception.
Initially I was a bit dissatisfied with Newman's voice. If you ask me now, on the contrary, I think it's one of the things I adore the most about the album. That and the drumming of Thom Green. The album is pretty interesting mix of genres and the most terrific part of it is that it just doesn't allow you to get bored anywhere through the composition. If I have to label it, I would describe it as a pleasant mixture of indie, folk and pop music. Well, I think I covered the most important things. The rest is your task!
I hope you can sink in the world of Awesome wave and get the best out of it. I'm looking forward to hearing more of those guys. If I have to choose, my favourite track on the album would be "Bloodflood". How about you?
